Unknown by most, over the past few years, the companies that manufacture motor oil have been reducing the amount of a major component in motor oil. The reasoning behind this is to increase the life expectancy of catalytic converters in newer cars up to 120,000 miles or more.
The oil component in question is zinc dialkyl-dithio-phosphate or ZDDP. This oil additive has been used in motor oil for almost 70 years to handle extreme pressure areas in engines such as the contact point of flat tappets against camshafts, wrist pins, pushrod ends, rings and so forth. Car manufacturers have tried to address this in newer engines by using roller lifters and re-engineering other areas of extreme pressure.
Older engines using the new oil formulations are not fully protected as they have been in years past. About 3 years ago engine builders noticed a marked increase in engine failures. One engine builder said that he experienced more engine failures in 3 years than he had in the last 30 years. A search began to find out the cause. They discovered that the oil formulation had been changed and the lack of ZDDP had been causing cam lobes to go flat.
Once this problem was understood alternative solutions began cropping up. These included using diesel engine oil and racing oils, which for now, some are higher in ZDDP. These work to a certain degree but both have their complications when used as the motor oil in a street driven engine.
Here are some articles that discuss this problem in more detail:
These articles were all written before a new product, ZDDPlus™ was released to the market and demonstrate the work-arounds that developed to halt the damage that was being done. It takes twice as much EOS to equal a bottle of ZDDPlus™ and diesel engines are now being required to use catalytic converters so the oil used in diesels will surely see their ZDDP levels drop.
The solution is simple, just replace the ZDDP in your favorite brand name oil. Instead of guessing that you have the correct protection, ZDDPlus™ ensures that you have the correct level of protection.
ZDDPlus™ was created to fill the needs of collector cars of all types.
